Permatang Pauh Revisited (Yet Again)

Anwar Ibrahim plays the crowd like a maestro at the Kelana Jaya Stadium, 6 July 2008 (photo by TV Smith)

I salute and thank Sessions Court judge S.M. Komathy Suppiah for releasing Anwar Ibrahim on a personal bond of RM20,000 this morning after recording his plea of innocence. From all reports, the judge performed her duty fairly, honorably, and with all the courtesy due to a Prime Minister elect. There is a glimmer of hope yet in the Malaysian Judiciary.

My heart was heavy last night, pondering the possibility that Anwar might well be detained and forced to contest the Permatang Pauh by-election from behind bars. He himself had steeled his resolve for such a possibility, quipping that in that eventuality his songkok and sarong would have to represent him. So it was a profound pleasure to learn today that Anwar is free to campaign in person and be in the loving company of his family, colleagues, and friends. The pleasure was doubled by the simple fact that the judge acted compassionately, humanely, and wisely by letting Anwar walk out a free man. This is evidence that there are still a few members of the judiciary capable of doing their job without fear or favor and who refuse to be browbeaten into subservience to political puppetmasters.

PERMATANG PAUH DECLARATION REVISITED

Being conscious of the Quranic injunction which urges striving towards betterment;

And inspired by the Asian traditions, which all encourage renewal for the individual and for society;

And acknowledging that Malaysia is in the grip of a terrible crisis and requires recourse to its inner strengths in order to rise again,

We the citizens of Malaysia of all cultural and religious backgrounds are determined to launch a movement for comprehensive reform:

A reform movement shining with a light radiating from aspiring and pure hearts; from the awareness that man is truly noble and free, with rights and responsibilities, that it is a sacrilege to abuse and denigrate any man or woman, to bind and restrict any man or woman without following the due process of just laws;

A reform movement to establish justice for all, the weak and strong, the rich and poor, to preserve the institutions and processes of law from the defilement of graft and abuse of power;

A reform movement to sanctify the power of the people through democratic means, for democracy is an imperative: man’s capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man's inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary;

A reform movement that champions economic justice, one that advocates fairness in economic growth and distribution so that the rich do not get richer at the expense of the poor, for the world has enough for everyone, but too little to satisfy everyone’s greed;

A reform movement to eradicate graft and abuse of power, to strip the opulent and greedy clique of their power to manipulate the market;

A reform movement to reinforce a dynamic cultural identity, where faith in our noble cultural traditions is intact, but there is openness to all that is good in all traditions;

A reform movement to launch the Malaysian nation into the information age and the borderless world, encouraging wisdom, self-assurance and openness towards a global friendship based on the principles of truth and justice.

We launch this reform movement as a peaceful movement, in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution and in observance of the principles of the rule of law.

The time has come. Unite for Reformasi.

antares ... I appreciate ur views on the need to avoid judical punishment on these degrading low lifes, and instead revert to public humiliation and national apology.

But unfortunately after 10 years of dispicable lies, evil manipulations and filthy corruption, augustine paul still lives in his 5 million dollar home in bangsar and enjoys his monthly holiday trips to exotic islands like a free man while rahim thamby is still a director of a company with govt contracts worth 5m per anum who is still smiling like an innocent fcker when he smokes his cuban on weekends. These dogs don't have enough dignity in them to admit what they've done was wrong. Their misguided souls would never feel apologetic.

Its time we made an example of them and put an end on lies and waste of public funds. I'm tired of listening to politicians n judges n doctors enforcing their ideologies on me and telling me what I should think and do. I work hard for my money and get really pissed when they piss on my tax contribution.

Enough is enough. I say we lynch them!

All right, fadeO... go ahead and lynch "them"! Only problem is: would you be satisfied to only have Augustine Paul and Rahim Thamby Chik's heads on a stake? There are so many of these weak men (plus a handful of their Lady Macbeths) in Umno/BN... you may eventually have to lynch a few thousand of them. That's a lot of dirty, sweaty work - they'll all be shitting their pants and puking all over the place in terror as they await their turn at the guillotine. And will you be our Robespierre, the rabble gangleader who went on a vendetta against all aristocrats during the French Revolution and who himself ended up executed? My point is this: our first priority is to wrest control of the ship of state from the grubby hands of these well-dressed buccaneers, fraudsters and thugs in Umno - we have no choice here, because if we don't act NOW, this country is sunk. And those of us who can, will migrate. The rest will be forced to experience being ruled at gunpoint by an enemy within the blanket. In other words, it's vital that our actions be prompted by love for ourselves and for our country - not by hatred and vengeance. Whatever retribution meted out to the losers must be carried out firmly, justly and gently. Otherwise the "New Boss" will be the same as the "Old Boss."

Komathy Suppiah has always been my favourite judge when she was still in KL (Civil) Sessions 6. Some lawyers accused her of being pro-defendant. I prefer to think of her as being pro-reason and pro-justice. My mates and I were commenting in the court canteen on Friday that if Anwar becomes PM, Komathy might just be our next CJ! I wonder if we will ever see that happening in the cesspool that is Malaysia now...

Cesspools are not forever, Commando Wong. They can be drained, disinfected, and converted to Japanese-style public baths - with a little bit of political will!

Antares ... The lynching term I used was purely metaphoric. It refers to court issued punishment severe enough to show justice to the victims and make an exemple of these seem-to-be-above-the-law goons.

Justice the way I see it is a tireless process. It is like that in a lot of civilised countries. If there are alot of umno goons out there who need to be punished, then we should start punishing them. Not close one eye. Let justice catch up with them in due time, but the ball needs to roll now. Otherwise they'll be alot more dirtbags everyday if excuses like there are too many to prosecute were given.

My suggestion for 'lunching' is not consumed by hate I'm afraid, but driven by a strong desire to stop all the nonsense we keep reading about in the papers but are too scared to do anything about.

To do this, I don't think I need to be a gangleader of the mob if we had a good system in place with law abiding enforment officers who are actually afraid of the law.

I bet you knew this already.

Well, Mr Lochoe... what can I say? Guess I'll leave your ridiculous prediction of an Umno win for posterity to look at and snigger.
